Villages of Uttarakhand (Bagori and Mukhwa)

 Villages of Harsil :

1)Bagori

In Harsil , we got a chance to visit some villages which includes Bagori: A small village with Wooden Houses… Yes ! The houses were made of woods and every corner of the village was clean without any litter or waste. This village was also awarded Swachh Bharat for its cleanliness in 2019. When we entered the village we were just amazed at the lifestyle of the people here who were very sweet and polite to us.

The Bhotiya Community of Bagori

After interacting with a few people,we came to know that the people of this village are a part of the Bhotiya Community which originates from Nelong Valley. During the Indo Chinese War in the 1960s, they shifted to this village.

Since then they reside here and practice Apple Farming, Weaving and other such activities. The Apple Orchards of Harsil, especially Bagori, are very famous and they are exported worldwide. We also got a chance to enjoy the fresh fruit directly from the Orchard.

One of the best thing you will find in this village is that everyone is engaged in some or the other work and are not dependent for their source of income. Some practice farming of Pahadi Rajma, Apples and some other crops and others practice Sheep Rearing, from which they make woolen clothes and many bags and other products.

Another fact about this village is that the Youth and the young generation were not present in the village. This was very shocking for us because we saw everyone was old and there were no people like us or of our age. Out of curiosity I and few of our teammates asked the ladies over there about this. They told us that all their children were either studying or working in Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Roorkee and other plain areas. These people also move to plains during winter season, because of heavy snowfall and extreme climate during the month of October - December. Exploring this village developed our perspective and there were many unknown interesting facts which we learned during our visit to the Bagori Village

2)Mukhwa Village

Located between the mountains and green forest, the Mukhwa Village of Harsil is known for its famous temple. After trekking for few minutes we reached the temple. It is believed that during the winter season when the Gangotri is snow covered, the idol of Maa Ganga is brought here and the pilgrims pray here during those six months. The temple is beautiful and peaceful.

This Village is also very beautiful surrounded by lush green trees , rivers and mountains. People of this village grow apples and rajma , which they sell further.

So that was all about the Gangotri and Harsil. Both the places have their unique features and individual importance. If you want to experience peace and connect with nature, you must visit both these places and it would be a Cherry On Cake if you are in group.

Gangotri and Harsil: Where Spirituality meets Serenity

Harshil’s Hidden valleys and Gangotri’s Gentle Breeze

Recently we went on a trip to Gangotri and Harsil valley, where we explored many places and it was one of our best college trips. It was a 3 day trip beginning from 29th September to 1st October.

Day 1(From Haridwar to Harsil)

On 29th September we departed from the college at around 6 am, and headed towards Harsil from the bus. It was a 12 hour long journey and we reached our Hotel in Harsil in the evening at around 7 pm. On our way , we had our breakfast and also took a hot water bath in the Hot Spring of Gangnani. It felt warm and we were relaxed after traveling throughout the day. We resumed our journey and headed towards our hotel in Dharali village of Harshil. The hotel was spacious and affordable. We took some rest and then went for dinner. As we had traveled the whole day, we decided to take a rest in the hotel itself. The Dharali Village is also home to many spiritual temples and Kalp Kedar is one of them. We also got a chance to explore this temple and know its spiritual importance.

Day 2 (Gangorti and Harsil)

The next day, on 30th September, we departed for Gangotri early in the morning. The Gangotri Temple is considered one among the 4 Dhams of Indian culture. When we entered the temple, it felt blissful and the environment was full of positivity. After the temple, we also went to witness the Ganga river and the pure touch of Holy Ganga felt like a feather to the soul. The scenic beauty , the spiritual environment of the place and the presence of Maa Ganga felt like heaven. We prayed at the temple, and then departed for Harsil Valley.

As soon as we entered Harsil, a cool breeze welcomed us and it felt like nature was awaiting and calling us. Located on the banks of Bhagirathi, this small place holds beauty at its peak. The view was just mesmerizing and we captured a lot of pictures . It is a perfect tourist spot, which is still unexplored. Later we also visited some of the villages of Harsil, which we will see in our next blog.

Get ready to witness the clean green villages of Uttarakhand through this blog! Till then

The Indian Education System

The modern education system of India is based on Marksheet and Degree, rather than skill and knowedge development. Majority of the educational institutes focus on marks and ignore the talent and skills a young child posseses. As we have seen in the popular Bollywood movie, 3 Idiots, the Indian Parents are more consered with grades and salary package. Due to this the students like the leading characters, kill their passion and take admissions in Engenierring and Medical Colleges

As a student I have also seen my friends giving up their passion and interest because of the parental and socital pressure. But I find myself very obliged to choose my passion and study something I love. The institutions should understand that the books are not the source of real education.

There are many developed countries Canada , US, Germany ,who have better education system than India. Due to this Degree oriented education system, the issues like educated unemplyment are also increasing.

Education plays a very important role in the development of a nation. Hence, it should be knowlege oriented and along with marks, the character and skill development of students should be focused. With the introduction of the New Education Policy(NEP 2020), the scenario is changing. Under this policy the government of India aims to achieve 100 % Gross Enrollment Ratio across all levels by 2030.

The NEP consists of various points which would focus on skill enhancement and overall development of students. Some of them are:

  • Universal Access- The NEP enusres that all children have access to quality education from pre primary to grade 12
  • Early Childhood care and Education-It extends the Right To Education eligibility from 6-14 to 3-18 years.
  • New Curriculum and Pedagogy in School-  The New Education Policy encourages local languages to be the medium of instruction at least up to Grade 5 and it also  promotes bi-lingual education and textbooks for learning.
  • Testing and Assessments- It Promotes  formative assessments , peer assessment, and holistic progress reports, to measure the ongoing academic progress of the children.
  • Equitable and inclusive educationSpecial Education Zones (SEZs) and Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs)/KVs to be set up in aspirational districts, with targeted focus on improving the quantity and quality of learning
